The Structural Technical Group focuses primarily on highway infrastructure, buildings and structurally related topics. The group organizes both informational dinner seminars and instructional programs on specific topics. Informal topic presentations are also being planned. The STG has been a strong committee for many years with the following active members dedicated to bringing educational topics to structural engineers:

Past Events:

• On April 15, 2010, our Structural Technical Group of the American Society of Civil Engineers at the North Jersey Branch along with the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at NJIT presented a half-day spring seminar on the “Application of Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) to Bridge and Building Design and Construction”. Speakers: Lou N. Triandafilou, PE, FHWA, Senior Structural Engineer, Hota Ganga Rao, PE, West Virginia University, Director of Constructed Facilities Center, Samer Petro, PE, Gannett Fleming Inc., Manager of West Virginia Operations, John Hillman, PE, Teng Associates, Senior Associate.
• On March 27, 2008, our Structural Technical Group of the American Society of Civil Engineers at the North Jersey Branch along with the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at NJIT presented a half-day spring seminar on the “Design and Construction of Cable-Stayed Structures in Buildings and Bridges”. Speakers: Jorge M. Suarez, PE, Director of Bridge Services, Michael Baker Corporation, Rima Taher, PhD, University Lecturer, New Jersey Institute of Technology, David M. Campbell, PE, President of Geiger Engineers.
• On November 27, 2007, the STG presented a Dinner Seminar on the topic of “Bridge Inspection, Safety Assessment and Bridge Performance Measures: A Look to the Future”. Speaker: Bala Sivakumar, PE, TransSystems/Lichtenstein Engineering Consultants.
• On April 06, 2006, our Structural Technical Group of the American Society of Civil Engineers at the North Jersey Branch along with the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at NJIT presented a half-day spring seminar on “Sustainability in Structural Design." Instructors: Craig Schwitter, P.E., Structural Engineer, Buro Happold, NYC; Ron Wilkinson, US Green Building Council, New Jersey; and William Bobenhausen, Professor of Architecture, New Jersey Institute of Technology.
• On January 19, 2006, the STG presented a Dinner Seminar on the topic “Railroad Bridge Design per AREMA Manual." Speaker: Ken Clausen, P.E., Structures Department Head and Senior Project Manager, KS Engineering, New Jersey.
